Pinkwashing

I bought this adorable sweatshirt in Chicago last year, but the second time I wore it we went out for ribs (before I became a vegetarian) and I got grease on it. I was crushed, since it was so Audrey Hepburn with skinny jeans and ballet flats. I tried to get the stains out and ended up with a couple of bleached spots. I thought it was ruined and it sat in the back of my closet until this weekend. I finally decided to dye it as a last attempt to save it and went over to Michaels to buy a package of RIT.

Near the back of the store, behind the halloween crafts stuff and the premature christmas decorations lurked a display festooned with pink. You could scrapbook, knit, paint, decal or just buy “awareness” bracelets to support “awareness.”

With the rare exception of one or two products that designated the BCRF as a recipient of “a donation,” everything on the display was made by a single company whose tags stated that your purchase was supporting “awareness” or just as often, said nothing at all.

Out of everything, this (below) was the most offensive.

The tag on these plastic tote bags said NOTHING about donations or anything.

I thought that I could be a snarky gadfly around pinkwashing but the line about “the taken” really hit me. They are selling this cheap, tawdry garbage made by slave labor in China to profit from my death. This disease doesn’t need balloons with pink ribbons.

I’m starting to think I won’t make it through october.

  1. Balls. “The Taken.” Sounds like an M.Knight Shamalamadingdong movie. This will be my first pink October. Before I had breast cancer I couldn’t have told you that this was breast cancer awareness month. It came and went and I was none the wiser. Now it stands over me like an intimidating demon. How awful. I hope it goes quickly.

  2. I thought I was the only one to call him that! I wonder what the twist would be?

I was the same way before my dx. October was my birthday month, the lead up to the coolest holiday ever…basically my favorite time of the year. Now, not so much.
